Does wealth keep growing after 65?
The median net worth of American families in 2025, by the age of the person at the head of the household.
Yes. In 2025 the typical American family headed by someone aged 65 to 74 had a net worth of about $432,000; for families headed by someone 75 or older it was about $505,000, the highest of any age group. At the other end, families headed by someone under 35 had about $33,000. In the Federal Reserve's previous survey, in 2022, that top spot belonged to families aged 65 to 74.

What it shows
Each stack is a median: half of the families in that age group were worth more, half less. The stacks climb steeply through working life, from $32,800 under 35 to $156,000 at 35 to 44 and $254,700 at 45 to 54, then keep rising more gently: $411,300 at 55 to 64, $431,900 at 65 to 74 and $504,600 at 75 and older.
Compared with 2022, in 2025 dollars, the median rose for families aged 35 to 44, 55 to 64 and 75 and older, and fell for families under 35, aged 45 to 54 and aged 65 to 74. The largest move was at the top: up from $366,300 to $504,600 for the oldest families.
What it leaves out
These are snapshots of different families, not one family's path through life. Today's older households built their wealth in different decades, with different house prices, pensions and markets, from those the young face now.
A median also hides a very wide spread inside each age group. The average is far higher than the median in every group, because a small number of very wealthy families pull it up, which is why we show the median. And net worth is not spending money: much of it is often tied up in a home or a retirement account.

Figures come from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, table view, net worth by age of reference person, median, all values in 2025 dollars, as published on 9 October 2026. The survey interviews a representative sample of US families every three years. We rounded each median to the nearest $1,000 for the drawing; the exact values are in the text above.
And the answer is → Yes: from $432,000 at 65 to 74 to $505,000 at 75 and older, the highest of any age.
